When it comes to asking for a raise you have to have a lot of backbone, however, you also need to have reasons why you think you deserve it. Don't ask for a raise if you have only been there for a few weeks or years. You are still proving yourself at that time. However, when you become a part of the company and apart of a hard working team that makes the company, you deserve every bit of a raise.
You will need to take the proper steps to ask for the pay raise, but keep in mind that there are consequences to everything. You may end being put on a list that the boss now will watch or you will get the raise with no trouble, however, you will need to keep up the good work after you have gotten the raise.
You will find that planning and preparation is the key to getting a raise. You will need to think about the timing and you will want to ask for something that is fair. That means that you are going to have to research the market rates for your job in the present. Also, when you prepare yourself for anything, you will feel confident in asking for something that you truly do deserve.
You will also want to get to know the way that your company works or practices. This means that you will want to see if they offer raises annually or if you are likely to receive a raise at any other time during the year. Usually they will give you an annual review and that will determine rather or not you deserve a raise. However, listen to your boss, if they say that everyone is getting a raise, well you aren't getting more. You don't want to ask for something that you don't think will happen. It's not worth it!
Again, you need to do your research and prove that other companies are paying more for the same work that you do. You will be able to get all the information online and through salary calculators. You will want to think about the areas in which they get paid more and reflect on your position and location. However, if there is a company locally who pays more, you will be making a good point. Before you go for a raise, what you need to do is put in the extra effort. Put in more hours at the office and offer to work weekends and nights. You need to make a good lasting impression of yourself in front of the boss. Then after a month or so of hard work, you may want to consider starting your research and asking for the raise. However, don't just quit putting the extra time in straight off, but you will want to slowly decrease your time at work back to a reasonable amount. Keep in mind that extra credit never hurt anyone.
You will want to keep in mind that this is something that could go either way. You could give it your all and still be turned down. You have to think about the times. Maybe the company is just not as well off as you think it is. Maybe they are afraid that if they give you a raise, they need to give everyone a raise. Keep these things in mind for cases of rejection.
